This guide is designed as an additional resource and temporary support, while OACAS, in collaboration with CASS, consults with important interest groups, collects information and monitors sectoral services for 16- and 17-year-olds to identify provincial best practices for working with this new age group. This guide is intended to provide additional support to Child Welfare Services (CSCs) and child protection staff who provide services to 16- and 17-year-olds (and older youth in general). If no agreement can be reached between you and the CAS on where the child should be placed, you will be entitled to a hearing (trial). There are five possible outcomes in a child protection study. OcL has lawyers across Ontario who represent children and youth in child protection cases before the courts. The role of the OCL lawyer is to defend the views and interests of young people independently. The lawyer informs young people about the court process, provides legal advice on available options, and engages with youth in court and other proceedings, for example. The CAS may remove your child from your home if you sign an agreement, but do not comply with the conditions. According to CYFSA, a child is defined as a person under the age of 18.

However, if a child of 16 or 17 years of age is involved, the child must accept a voluntary (consented) agreement. A child who is 16 or 17 years of age cannot be removed from the home without the child`s consent. You can enter into an agreement with a company in which you reside to obtain services and support, subject to the following admission criteria, all of which are necessary: CYFSA also recognizes the need to combat systemic racism and discrimination. All services provided to children and the family must respect diversity and human rights and take into account a child`s race, culture, gender and other personal characteristics. Some services may be free. Others may have to pay you. Let CAS know if you can afford to pay for certain services, as these may have a shorter waiting list. Effective January 1, 2018, children`s charities are now required under the Child and Family Assistance Act to provide the full range of protective services to all eligible youth aged 16 or 17. This is a big step forward for young people who cannot live safely at home. The companies will then take the information into account and can open an investigation.

The company will want to talk to you about your experiences and concerns to help them assess if you are vulnerable and, if so, what services are right for you. The company may need to talk to your family about the information you provide during your interview. You can protect your identity as a reference source. When a person calls or reports to the CHILD, a child protection officer conducts an initial screening. This means that the child protection worker will take certain steps to review the report to decide if the CHILD Welfare should take care of your family. Sometimes the CAS decides that they don`t need to take any further action at this stage because they are confident that your child will be well cared for. .
